On May 5, 2011, the fourth “Patricia L. Kanan Award for Outstanding Service” was presented to Helen Jesse, longtime friend and member of the ACKCSC.
It was after the 2007 National Specialty, Patty Kanan asked Helen to try to 'organize' the auction process. Helen wanted try to have some auction items that anyone could afford to bid on; now bidding often starts for as little as $1. Additionally, she sought to improve the checkout process so folks can get through checkout in a timely manner. In 2010 auction was brought to everyone by having daily auctions ringside in the show area. This was a huge hit and now people have come to expect it; on the average the daily auctions raise about $1,000 each day for the Charitable Trust.
Only a few individuals know how many of the auction items have been purchased by Helen and donated for the auction. When asked about this she will tell you, “I can’t write the big checks, but I can write lots of smaller ones and let others wage bidding wars trying to get them.” For the week of the National Specialty, Helen’s goal is to get each of you to part with your money. How she achieves this varies; selling sterling silver European charm bracelets, embroidered Gabriel microfiber drying towels and drying coats or it could be your love of all things chocolate, gourmet chocolate covered Oreo’s and pretzels. You never know what it is until you find yourself reaching for your wallet.
