Patricia L. Kanan Award for Outstanding Service

In 2008 the Charitable Trust Board of Trustees established the “Patricia L. Kanan Award for Outstanding Service”.  This award named for our most generous and dedicated benefactor to date is presented as a way to acknowledge individuals who have provided outstanding service and/or contribution to our cause.  At the Trustees discretion this award may be presented to one or more individuals at the Charitable Trust Banquet held at the conclusion of our National Specialty.

 Gilbert Kahn

On April 30, 2009, the second “Patricia L. Kanan Award for Outstanding Service” was presented to Gilbert S. Kahn, long time ACKCSC club member, AKC judge, Shih Tzu and Cavalier breeder and benefactor of the Trust.

Gilbert’s philanthropic work is well known. Fine arts and the opera have benefited from his interest.  He has also devoted much time and significant resources to the Sport of Dogs. One of Gilbert’s generous contributions supported the creation to the Dog Museum in St Louis. The School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania carries his name.  It is here that someday the genetic DNA marker for MVD may be developed.

Although the significance of his contributions is not readily apparent, his every act of integrity, compassion, courage and generosity enriches, empowers or encourages others to emulate his example.  It is for these reasons we recognized him with the 2009 Patricia L. Kanan Award.
